With air travel becoming increasingly expensive and difficult, I suspect that the jetting designers in is going to become too expensive for many regional theatres in the next 10 years. I've been on the regional circuit since the late 80's and have seen a precipitous decline in the number of the theatres willing to hire in outside sound designers in the last five years. When theatres do co-pros, they often don't want me to come out - just my cues. I used to make a few trips to the west coast every year, now once every couple of years. This is also because there are many more designers in places like LA and San Diego.

Although I too am guilty of too many plane trips in the course of my job (I write to you from Austin), I have been able to travel a lot less in the because of the internet - I can routinely send files via e-mail or ftp servers, communicate with theatres more efficiently. I do all my browsing/shopping for music and fx (and equipment) online. I used to have to buy tons of CD's and hope to find what I needed.

I'm currently scoring a TV show, and haven't even met any of the people I'm working with - everything's been shared back and forth online. With theatre, though, you have to all be in the same room at some point.

I guess the bottom line is that I hope that some of my plane trips are offset by the savings I've been able to make in other areas - no more car trips, fewer trips into theatres for little changes, etc. But overall I've made a point in the last few years to try to stay in the NYC are more - for the environment, and for my family.
